Broncos links

I hate to move the news of the Nuggets’ win down, but you can scroll down. (Can’t you?) Here are a few things I’ve run across lately.

1. Rick Reilly’s brief but cutting take on the Broncos’ draft haul this year. The worst part was when he said of McDaniels:

This is the same genius who traded one of Denver's first-round choices in 2010 to move up in the second round to take a 5'9'' defensive back—Alphonso Smith…And if the Broncos are going to be as lame as I think they're going to be—4-12 perhaps—that first-round pick will be very high.

And it’s time for a retraction. After the draft I wrote about Denver’s trade for Alphonso Smith, thinking we had dealt Chicago’s first-round pick, which I estimate next year will be about No. 32 overall. But Reilly’s right: it was our own pick we gave up for the 5-9 corner with 4.5 speed (which I don’t think is all that fast for that position). In other words, it was a DISASTROUS move, giving up the top pick of next year's draft for a second-round corner. The Broncos screwed up big-time. I guess I screwed up, too, by not realizing it, but there you go. I’m so pissed I don’t even want to write the rest of this (I started out here assuming Reilly was wrong…crap).

2. Next year we’ll surely be calling for Tom Brandstater, our new rookie QB from Fresno State, to get on the field. Here’s a YouTube clip of his highlights from the 2007 season. Now it’s possible that whoever cut this tape is a moron, but these aren’t very good highlights: the biggest standout to me was how bad his pass 23 seconds into the clip is. That’s a touchdown with a real quarterback. Freak!

3. And finally, Woody Paige had an interview with Pat Bowlen that’s worth reading, but will hardly improve your mood.

This is the most depressing post in the history of HPS. And I'm afraid you even left out the most accurate thing Rick Reilly said:

McDaniels is the worst combination of things: Terribly naïve and doubly confident. Bronco fans, you're screwed.

Yeah, Reilly tore him to shreds. I'm not sure it's all bad—for example, focusing on a small core of potential draftees might actually be a good move, in theory—but as Reilly said, it's like the guy thinks he can't make a mistake.

DV, I was wondering how long it would take someone to pick up on that. I really do hope Bowlen is okay, but that was not an encouraging article.

Who cares?

So we finally got done with the NBA playoffs after nearly two months of stretched-out play, and tomorrow's the draft. I really couldn't care less. I'm so burned out on the sport. Sadly, there's nothing else going on worth mentioning, so we might as well get into it. (Yes, baseball, Pugs, but I haven't really started following that this year yet, sorry.) Would the NFL hold its draft five days after the Super Bowl? Of course not, and not just because the league doesn't want to distract from the highlight of its annual calendar, the Pro Bowl. Of course, the NBA's situation is a little different. College play ended two and a half months ago, and the teams want to get draftees ready for the all-important summer league play (because the kind of guys that need the summer league always end up players). Not that when college basketball is over is relevant, anyway-the league is overrun by a bunch of high school players "just months removed from their prom" (...

Did CU ever win the Pac-12?

In 2010, I bet a college buddy of mine (who longtime readers may remember as the only other contributor to Hole Punch Sports) that CU’s football team would not win the Pac-12 in the next 15 years. Guess what? It’s time for me to gloat, because I was right. Why we were doomed Back in the day, a lot of people made the argument that CU should join the Pac-12 because we’d get so much more TV money there. Of course, given college football is the answer to the question, “what if you had a sport where multiple teams were like the Yankees, and you created a whole universe of haves and have-nots?”, then yeah, you want to be aligned with some of the haves. But the question in my mind wasn’t, “will CU be better off with more money?” That’s an obvious yes. The question I asked was, will CU be any more competitive in their own conference if they’re competing against teams who are also getting more money? I couldn’t see why they would be.
