(Buffaloes, Buffaloes.) Go CU!

Colorado dominated Nebraska with its running game Friday. Hmmm, when have I seen that before?

With a final score (65-51) that resembled an NBA Eastern Conference playoff game more than a Big XII rivalry showdown, the Buffs-Cornhuskers game was a thrilling conclusion to Colorado's regular season. Go ahead and credit the now on-again efficiency of quarterback Cody Hawkins, but never forget the Buffs' star tailback. Right now that's Hugh Charles (169 yards), who managed just three touchdowns Friday. (Yes, that was sarcasm.)

The game was troublesome in the first half, with Nebraska taking a 35-24 lead into the break. But almost as soon as Colorado's troubles started, they were a distant memory. Interception return for a touchdown. Then Charles scored to take the lead, and did it again to widen the gap. The game was 44-35, but the Buffs weren't finished. Hawkins chucked a touchdown pass to the corner, and then Charles completed his second-half hat trick. Nebraska scored a couple of late touchdowns, which saved face, just not coach Bill Callahan's job. (And that's bad news for Colorado fans, if you ask me.)

Colorado's 34-0 run in the second half was clearly the key to the game. OK, that's about the dumbest thing I've ever written, and it's time to come clean. I missed most of the game Friday, a lot of it because I was shopping. Just shut up. However, since pretty much everyone here went to CU, why don't you loyal fans let me know what I missed?

I'm embarrassed to say I also missed the game...I thought it was on Saturday for some reason.

ahhhhh . . . punchinello was shopping . . . was he? precious. I saw the game and didn't even go to CU. I decided this year I'm not doing any shopping over Thanksgiving weekend. It's my time, baby. Anyway, it was a sweet game. Pretty much as you describe . . . it was a close one when I turned it on . . . but then Colorado ran away with it.

I missed the game because I was driving to the destination wedding I had to attend this past weekend . . . but anytime we hang up 60+ on the Huskers, I am happy. Bill Callahan was to CU what Marty Schottenheimer was to the Broncos, so I am sad to see him go.

So, do you think the Buffs will make a bowl game?

Five mini-columns

In this in-between time at the start of football and late-but-not-that-late in the everlasting baseball season, there's not any one topic that stands out, so I thought I'd give you my well thought out opinions on five things in sports (originally ten, but I let No. 3 run so long that I thought I'd cut it short (having now finished this, I realize the word short is out of place here)). Did CU ever win the Pac-12?

In 2010, I bet a college buddy of mine (who longtime readers may remember as the only other contributor to Hole Punch Sports) that CU’s football team would not win the Pac-12 in the next 15 years. Guess what? It’s time for me to gloat, because I was right. Why we were doomed Back in the day, a lot of people made the argument that CU should join the Pac-12 because we’d get so much more TV money there. Of course, given college football is the answer to the question, “what if you had a sport where multiple teams were like the Yankees, and you created a whole universe of haves and have-nots?”, then yeah, you want to be aligned with some of the haves.
