My reaction to some other picks:
The Top Three: Does anyone anywhere think Houston made the right pick? Even Mario Williams’ family is like, “Man, I can’t believe we got away with that.” Do you think Gary Kubiak would have signed on to coach if he’d known they’d pass on Young and Bush? Kubiak has been publicly supportive of the pick but come on, he knows football better than that.
At No. 2 the Saints got Reggie Bush. After the Drew Brees signing, I can understand passing on Vince Young. Unfortunately, there’s potential for a T.O.-type situation here. Can Reggie Bush stomach taking a pay cut from last year?
Now the Titans had the kind of a draft a crappy team is supposed to have, reeling in the best quarterback in Young with the third pick and a top runner in LenDale White in the second round. White should push incumbent Chris Brown for playing time right away.
Young’s the type of player who could win MVP or take the Titans back to the Super Bowl. He might want to wait a while, though, because as soon he does that, the Titans’ll lock him out and start the search for his replacement.
Matt Leinart: I blew it. Last week I started writing an honest assessment of Leinart’s pro potential, but didn’t post it. The kicker is that since he struggled in bad weather-see: the windy UCLA game-I was going to suggest he go to a warm weather team, like Arizona. That’s as close as I’ll ever come to calling a draft pick.
Leinart can certainly be a solid starter, I just don’t see him as a perennial Pro Bowler like some do. Once again, if the Broncos actually wanted him but landed Cutler, then how fortunate we are.
Colorado Buffaloes: Tight end Joe Klopfenstein went to St. Louis. I’m not sure what the team’s direction is there-if they were still passing on every down, I’d love his chances to become a well-known player. Even without it, he can be a solid pro. Since they’re from CU, he and new Raven Quinn Sypniewski probably already have more blocking experience than most NFL lifers, so they can step in and contribute right away.
The Eagles picked former Buff Jeremy Bloom in the fifth round, continuing their quest to employ every sub-six-foot receiver available. He could be a Dante Hall-like return man, the main difference being that I won’t cheer if he blows out his knee.
The Browns tabbed fullback Lawrence Vickers in the sixth round, which is fitting, as his hard-nosed and versatile style calls to mind Cleveland lead-back Reuben Droughns. Vickers was one of the baddest ballers in all of college football. Why don’t the Broncos ever draft CU backs? Don’t you think they’d fit in well in our scheme?

Sure, Tags is on the way out, but doesn't the commissioner have a duty to the sport to, no matter what's on the card, announce Reggie Bush as the top pick?
Have you heard people say Leinart is in a great spot because of all the receivers Arizona's drafted? Can one of them explain to me why that didn't help Joey Harrington much in Detroit? The Edge is a nice weapon, too, but he's gotta be planning on sticking it in cruise control until the end of his contract.
I don't know, I like Tatum, I just question his health. Good thing health concerns are the kind of thing that just goes away.

i'm not sure what you guys see in vickers.
it's not like he was an animal in college. under-performed. never once was a difference maker.
perhaps this is just the vestiges of my angst towards a barnett system, but seriously, i never saw him do anything. help me see the error of my ways.
Well, my only real memory of Vickers in college is him steamrolling that CSU defender at the goal line, which was bad.
His stats are nothing special, but he really only carried the ball in short-yardage spots. To me, he just seems like the kind of low-profile tough guy who could chip in in our system. I don't think he should have gone No. 1 overall or anything, and we're not going to regret it for years, I just think it would have been a good mix of team and player. Plus it would be nice to root for Broncos I didn't actively hate, like when we picked Mike Anderson after he obliterated BYU my year there or the infamous van Pelt selection.
john, are you saying purify should've gotten more pt than brown?
he had a monster freaking season, and correct me if i'm wrong, purify got an extra season (or two) after brown to prove himself.. and he was nothing more than mediocre.
you are right, vickers didn't get a lot of looks. but, i don't feel like he made much with what he had. what i was sick of was the dumb "v-back" crap that the announcers spent 15 minutes dissecting every time the buffs played on television. it was so tired, some dumb pr stunt by barnett to make his offense sound exciting:
"see, v stands for versatile, because vikers can do it all..."
(like rush 6 times for 15 yards)
and yes, seriously, houston will ABSOLUTELY regret mario williams.

I thought Purify was at least as good as Brown when they were on the same team (the Fiesta Bowl year), and he was a more complete player-better receiver, blocker, etc. It's true he wasn't phenomenal afterwards, but I thought he was solid enough considering our team had some problems at the time. Then again, Brown could have been the best blocker of all-time, but since he got the ball up the middle every single play I guess there's no way to tell.
Did either of you guys see the SI story on Dan Hawkins a couple weeks back? Maybe I'm just a geek but it's getting me excited for the upcoming year(s).
Barnett's offense not exciting? You don't think desperate fake punts make up for 45 straight runs? I agree.
I can't imagine how it feels to be a Texans fan right now after the Williams pick. EVERYONE knows he'll be a bust next to Bush. Just terrible.
